On International Chess Day (July 20, 2023) Brendan Jamison revealed his new series of wool chess pieces at the Double Bastion on the ancient city walls of Derry. The 17th Century fortifications were built between 1613-1618 and remain intact, surrounding the entire inner city. Pictured behind the sculptures is the Verbal Arts Centre, the venue for the City of Derry’s weekly chess club, which meets every Thursday night from September to May.
International Chess Day is an annual celebration of the founding of FIDE (the International Chess Federation) which formed 99 years ago on July 20, 1924. On top of his career as a professional sculptor, Brendan Jamison is also a FIDE-licensed National Arbiter, running rated chess competitions across Northern Ireland. His upcoming Derry tournament will be held at the Maldron Hotel on Saturday September 9, 2023. Details can be found here www.brendanjamison.com/fide.html
The sculpture installation features 5 chess pieces, with pure coloured wool pouring out at the base of each piece, like a waterfall spilling outwards. This creates a sense of movement, like an animation. The colours are highly specialised, with the deep blue bought in India while the artist was in Delhi for a month-long project. When displayed inside, the sculptures seem to emit a mystical glow, bounching colour onto the surrounding walls, in particular The Orange Pawn, which becomes more illuminated as twilight approaches.
The wool chess pieces are inspired by Jamison's deep passion for the game which he has played competitively since age 15. As a cross-cultural and cross-generational activity, the artist embraces colour to celebrate diversity and the joy and happiness that chess can bring to players.
Three of the chess pieces, The Red Queen, The Yellow Knight and The Orange Pawn, will be on public display at the Ards Ards Centre from Friday July 28 to Friday August 25, 2023. Free entry. Daily opening times 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. Location: Ards Arts Centre, Town Hall, Conway Square, Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland, BT23 4NP |
